Please come and drink beer for Wes!

16 Mar

Do you like beer? Would you also like to help Wes?

Thanks to the amazing support of Guiseley Lions and Coopers bar & brasserie, you can combine these goals!

This year’s Guiseley Beer Festival (from the 16th to 18th May) is lending its support to Wesley’s Wish.  In 2014, the festival will be “Le Tour De Beer”, featuring real ales from around the circuit of the Grand Depart in Yorkshire.

What’s more, it’s being opened by Leeds & Scotland legend Gary McAllister…

You can read more about the festival and buy tickets here…

If you don’t think you can drink beer for Wes on these dates, please share this news with someone who might be able to take on the burden!  (Advance tickets can be bought from the above link.)

Combined with The Station Pub’s Music Festival on 25/5 – news of which we featured last week – May promises to be a great month for Guiseley and Wes.

Huge, huge thanks to the teams at the Guiseley Lions, Coopers and the Station Pub for their support.

The Station Pub & Guiseley Music Festival – check this out….

10 Mar

Tony and the amazing people at The Station pub have really kindly lent their support to Wesley’s Wish this year.  Not only are they dedicating the funds raised from The 11th Guiseley Muisic Festival on May 25th to support Wes, but – even more heroically – two of their number have signed up to do the Leeds 1/2 Marathon.

Amazing stuff – more on this to follow..

The Station is currently undergoing a massive refurbishment / extension and will be well worth checking out when it re-opens on the 22nd March!  Details of everything below – huge thanks guys.

Wes has been accepted for SDR in the US!

21 Feb

We just got this through from St Louis – only 6 days after sending the application!

Amazing, amazing news.  We’re thrilled, emotional and thrilled.

Thanks everyone for your brilliant support so far.

Now the hard work getting ready starts: it’s going to be a busy year!

Application to St Louis now complete!

15 Feb

Exciting news folks, after 8 weeks of preparation, form filling, filming and hunting down NHS records, Wes’ application to St Louis Children’s Hospital has now been sent!

This is kind of a big deal.   In theory, at some point in the next 4-6 weeks, we should get an answer as to whether Wes is ready for SDR yet.    We’re really optimistic this could mean that he’s off to the US within the next 6 months.

Exciting stuff. Watch this space!

Do something amazing in 2014: Help Wes walk

5 Jan

Before the year is out, we’re hoping to fly Wes to the USA for life-changing surgery and – by doing so –  give him the chance to walk for the first time.

Thanks to everyone’s support so far, we’re almost halfway to target.   Can you help Wes reach his goal?  We’d love to have you on the team.

3 ways

1)      Take on a sponsored challenge – like a 10K run, bike ride, marathon or big walk
We can help setup JustGiving pages, provide Wesley’s Wish t-shirts or just be there to cheer on the day!

2)      Run an event – like a cake sale, charity auction or clothes party
If you like, we can help with the organisation and getting coverage in the local press

3)      Pledge your team, club or businesses’ support to Wesley’s Wish.
Join the amazing organisations that have sponsored Wes so far

2014 is going to be amazing.  Please do get involved – it’d be great to have your help! – 2013 in review

2 Jan

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 10,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

New Year, New Wheels

1 Jan

2013-12-13 16.23.02-1

Happy New Year everyone!

2013 has been incredibly encouraging for Wes, thanks to the amazing support so many of you have given him.  From marathons to cake sales, via sky dives and football tournaments, thanks to everyone’s efforts we’re almost half-way towards our goals.

Whilst Wes isn’t up and walking yet, his dreams of getting mobile were really helped just before Christmas thanks to the wonderful people at Physcap, who bought him this new trike.  Purpose-built, this is specially adapted to allow Wes to sit comfortably, with super-low gears to allow him to pedal along.

Wes is absolutely over the moon with this, routinely braving the Yorkshire weather for trips around the park.  It’s great for his fitness, encouraging him to use his legs more and build up strength.  So, huge thanks to everyone at Physcap for making this possible.

From everyone at Wesley’s Wish, all the very best for 2014: it’s going to be amazing!

Walking with Donkeys!

6 Dec

In preparation of things to come, Wes is making some really good progress on building up strength.  As well as his gruelling regime of physio and hydrotherapy, he’s now started one of the most punishing forms of exercise: donkey riding!

The boy, astride his noble steed

This is excellent for building core muscles.  However, donkeys can be large and scary.  Over the 6 weeks he’s been doing this, he’s gone from utter, bewildering terror to really rather enjoying it.  Wes’ current favourite donkey is Andre The Donkey.  Yes: Andre.

This is all helping build up strength.  So much so that he’s just been assessed for this rather nifty looking walking frame.  This is one of the things that the NHS is only too happy to provide – so all being well he’ll be zipping around on one of his own at some point in the New Year.

2013 – WW’s Greatest Hits

25 Nov

We were lucky enough to be invited to call in today at St Mary’s School and do a little talk at their morning assembly.  The amazing young people of year 10 have made Wesley’s Wish their charity of the year for 2014 and will be planning all sorts of activities to help out.  To give them some inspiration, we put together this short video of some of 2013’s events and successes.

And we didn’t embarrass Isobel.  Well, not too much.

(Big apologies to anyone whose photos aren’t in this – we only had a few of them on the laptop when we were pulling it together.)

As you’ll see from the video, thanks to everyone’s efforts thus far, we’re almost half way there!  If anyone has any ideas for 2014, we’d love to hear!

Mikado for Wes!

11 Oct

Exciting news theatre fans!  The Aireborough Gilbert & Sullivan Society have announced that they’ll be supporting Wesley’s Wish this year!  In February 2014, they will be staging an amateur production of the Mikado – one of everyone’s favourite musicals.  All donations from the performances will go towards helping Wes.

To get the ball rolling, there will be a coffee morning promoting the show and supporting the cause this Saturday from 10am to noon at Yeadon Methodist Church Hall.

Please do turn up if you’re in the area.
